Police Cripple Multi-million Ringgit Vehicle Theft Syndicate

SHAH ALAM: Police toppled a multi-million ringgit vehicle theft syndicate, believed to be active for the past 10 years, with the arrest
of 12 suspects in Selangor and Perak on Feb 16 and 17.

Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said initially three men between 22 and 33 years old were caught red-handed trying to steal a lorry behind a supermarket in Rawang on Feb 16.
An inspection of the car they were driving revealed various car theft tools, such as screw drivers, pliers, modified wires and test pens, he added.

“This was followed by the detention of another 25-year-old suspect, about 4am on Feb 17 in Sabak Bernam which led to the raid of a yard in Kampung Air Putih, Simpang, Perak on the same day,” he said during a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday.
Tun Hisan said they arrested three local men and a woman as well as four Bangladeshis all between 18 and 50 years old, believed to be linked to the syndicate.

An estimated millions of ringgit worth of vehicle parts including car and lorry engines, front portions of cars, lorry heads and more than a hundred local cars were seized in the raid at the yard.
The earliest theft recorded involving the syndicate was a lorry reported stolen in 1999, he added.
Police were trying to trace a man known as R Muniandy, 38, who is the yard’s owner to facilitate investigations, said Tun Hisan.

The yard was in a remote oil palm plantation and located on private property and operating without a licence, he said.
The suspects have been remanded until today under Section 379 (A) of the Penal Code.
He also appealed to the public to cooperate by reporting on any suspicious premises in their
areas. — Bernama
